Departments

Hospitalisatie 16

This department accommodates patients with lung conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, and lung transplants.

Hospitalisatie 31

This ward houses patients with lung infection, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Functiemetingen 6

This department performs pulmonary function tests (basic spirometry, lung volume measurement, diffusion capacity testing, hyperventilation tests, provocation tests and exercise tests). Outpatient CPAP consultations also take place here.

Functiemetingen 6 - day room

In this pulmonology day room, patients are monitored following a lung transplant.

First lung transplant in Benelux for critically ill COVID-19 patient

A COVID-19 patient on the intensive care ward with irreparably damaged lungs was given new lungs on 1 Januari 2021 in the UZ Leuven transplant centre. It is the first time in the Benelux that someone on an intensive care COVID-19 ward gets a lung transplant.

Researchers discover important changes in pulmonary veins caused by COVID-19

A new trial has shown that COVID-19 causes important changes in the blood veins of the lungs. The deviations in the lungs show that the virus is a lot more harmful than regular influenza.

Belgian lung specialists recommend environmentally friendly inhalers that produce better treatment results for lung patients

The department heads of Belgian university hospitals are recommending the use of dry-powder inhalers to lung patients because they can deliver better treatment results for asthma and COPD. Moreover, they are far less damaging to the environment than traditional propellant driven aerosols.
