Researchers at UZ Leuven have found a way to avoid a second surgical procedure for unborn babies with a severe diaphragmatic defect. Thanks to a new smart balloon fitted with a magnetic valve the balloon can now be deflated by exposing it to the magnetic field of an MRI scanner. The pregnant mum walks around the MRI scanner rather than undergoing a further procedure.

UZ Leuven is the first hospital in the world to use a revolutionary scanner for brain research in patients. The new, highly precise PET scanner makes it possible to detect the earliest signs of brain diseases, years before a patient experiences the first symptoms.

UZ Leuven and KU Leuven have developed a new technique to identify perpetrators of sexual violence in cases where this was previously impossible. Via SpermFACS they can isolate sperm cells from biological evidence with greater sensitivity, even when only very few traces are present.
