Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis

“Healing children is also a kind of art”

The “Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis” (art for the hospital) Fund aims to embed art, in all its forms, in children’s healing processes to enhance overall care. Thanks to interactive encounters with artists, children in the children’s hospital experience unique moments that invite creative expression and allow them to forget their worries for a while.

Our projects

Art and creative expression are an important part of the healing process for young patients. The ‘Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis’ fund therefore organises numerous artistic and creative activities every month with children and various artists, within the walls of the children’s hospital.
The ‘Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis’ fund at UZ Leuven and M – Museum Leuven joined forces in 2020 for a sustainable art project at the heart of the new women and children’s hospital.
With this drawing project, a group of professional illustrators gives children in the children’s hospital a small, magical moment through a drawing. The illustrators take the children, for a moment, into another world: the anything-goes world.
Dance students from the Lemmens Institute and dance coordinator Jennifer Regidor create a dance for the patients and bring it to their bedside. As dance doctors, they first fill in a ‘dance prescription’ together with the children and then develop a dance entirely tailored to the child’s needs and wishes.
Each year, the ‘Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis’ fund organises The summer of mUZe. During the summer, the Muze room of the children’s hospital is turned into a lovely chill-out zone where children can take part in artistic workshops.

About us

Healing children is also a kind of art - Art

The words “Healing children is also a kind of art” were shared with us by a young patient affected by a long-term rheumatic disease. They express the insight that the healing arts require more than excellent medical and paramedical care. The “Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis” Fund aims to integrate art, in all its forms, into children’s healing processes and, in doing so, improve the overall quality of care. Interactive encounters with a variety of artists — music, drawing and sculpture, dance and theatre — encourage children in the children’s hospital to express themselves creatively. In this way, they experience unique moments that let them forget their worries for a while in a world where illness can dominate everything. For artists too, interacting and creating with sick children is a special experience that adds a further dimension to their artistic commitment. The project seeks, beyond the bounds of conventional medicine, to evolve towards a genuine “art of healing”.

The art project is made possible thanks to close collaboration between the children’s hospital and KU Leuven, Museum M and the City of Leuven, through the commitment of many healthcare professionals and artists, and with the support of sponsors and donors.

Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis is one of the funds of the KU Leuven Department of Fundraising and Alumni Relations (Dienst Fondsenwerving en Alumnirelaties).
