Preparing for your admission

Confirmation of your procedure

  • For some ophthalmology procedures, we contact you the day before to give the exact admission time. If your procedure is scheduled on a Monday, you will be contacted on Friday.
  • For ophthalmology procedures planned by an external practice, you will receive your appointment time in advance.
  • For dermatology, vascular surgery, orthopaedics and oncological surgery, you will receive in advance an appointment time at which you must register.

Fasting

You do not need to fast for your procedure unless explicitly stated in advance.

Unexpected schedule changes

Due to unforeseen circumstances, your procedure may be moved forward or delayed. Please take this into account.

This is why it is very important that we have the correct phone number to reach you at all times.

Unable to attend or running late

If, due to circumstances or illness, you are unable to come on the day of the procedure or if you are running late, please inform us in time to minimise disruptions to the surgery schedule.

Course of your admission

Who will accompany you?

What if you are discharged on the same day?

  • Be accompanied by no more than two adults. For children, both parents may come along, but not brothers, sisters or other children.
  • Accompanying persons can wait in the waiting room of Dagziekenhuis 3 or elsewhere in the hospital, such as the visitors' cafeteria or the coffee bar on the Gasthuisberg campus.
  • Accompanying persons will collect the patient from Dagziekenhuis 3.
  • It is best for companions to bring a wheelchair to Dagziekenhuis 3 to ensure smooth transport of the patient after surgery. Wheelchairs are available in the entrance hall at Toegang Oost.

What if you are admitted for one night?

  • Be accompanied by no more than two adults. This helps to avoid unnecessary crowds and ensures a calm environment for our patients.
  • For patients under 18, both parents may come along, but not brothers, sisters or other children.
  • Once the patient leaves for pre-op, the companion may go home or wait in the waiting area or elsewhere in the hospital, such as the visitors' cafeteria or the coffee bar on the Gasthuisberg campus.
  • If an accompanying person would like to visit the patient later, they can do so during visiting hours at Hospitalisatie 36 (overnight stay).
  • The patient’s hand luggage will be sent along to the hospital ward.

Registration and check-in

On the day of your procedure, report directly to the reception of Dagziekenhuis 3 at the agreed time, unless you have prior appointments in another department.
Do not check in first at the registration desk at the Toegang Oost entrance.

  • Our staff will go through the administrative process with you and provide any additional information if needed.
  • You will receive an identification bracelet, which you must wear throughout your stay.
  • Then, take a seat in the waiting room.
  • You will be called via the screen and directed to door 3, where a nurse will come to collect you.
  • Please note that patients are not called in order of arrival.
  • Eating or drinking is not allowed in the waiting area. If your companion wishes to eat, they can do so in the visitors' cafeteria De Vier or the coffee bar.

Prefer not to have your photo displayed on the call screen?

  • By default, the call screen displays your queue number along with your photo. If you would prefer not to have your picture displayed, please inform the reception staff at the day hospital during check-in. If you use mynexuzhealth, you can also disable the display of your photo (via the ‘Profile’ menu).

Preparing for your procedure

  • The nurse will take you from the waiting room to the preparation zone. Companions are not allowed into the preparation area.
  • The nurse checks your wristband and details and asks you a few questions.
  • You will be given a surgical gown to wear.
  • If necessary, the surgeon will mark the surgical site.
  • If necessary, the nurse will perform a few more operations, e.g. placing an IV or giving a sedative, etc.
  • The operating theatre nurse will accompany you to the operating theatre.

Personal belongings

  • If you stay with us in day admission, your personal belongings can be safely stored in a locker. Please note that space in the locker space is limited. Better leave unnecessary items at home or with your companion in the waiting area.
  • If you need to stay one night in the hospital, your hand luggage will travel with you.

In both cases, we recommend you only bring essential items.

Right after your procedure

After the procedure, you return to our pre- and post-care area. Depending on the procedure, you may need to stay there for a while or you may go home straight away.

  • The doctor and nurse will give you instructions for pain relief and wound care at home. Follow them carefully.
  • You will also receive the necessary prescriptions, certificates, follow-up appointments and a letter for your GP.

If you need to stay one night, you will be taken from post-op care to your hospital ward.
