Paying for your consultation

You do not need to pay for your consultation or examination at the hospital: your invoice will be sent to you two months after your appointment. Read more about payments and supplementary fees.

Invoicing and payment

Sometimes the hospitalisation insurance reimburses certain personal expenses after a consultation or examination. This depends on your specific policy and must be arranged by you with your insurer after payment. As a result, reimbursement does not happen automatically for consultations.

Supplementary fees

A supplementary fee is an extra amount that a doctor may charge in addition to the standard fee. Whether a doctor may charge such a fee depends on their convention status.

Convention statusSupplementary fee possible?
Fully conventionedNo
Partly conventionedYes, during certain time slots
Non-conventionedYes, always

When making your appointment, ask whether a supplementary fee applies.

The time slots during which partially-conventioned doctors may charge supplementary fees can be found on the NIHDI website (National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance, RIZIV/INAMI).

Examples: how much do you pay with or without a supplementary fee?

A fully conventioned doctor may never charge a supplementary fee. You therefore only pay the standard fee.

A partially conventioned doctor may only charge a supplementary fee during certain time slots.

For example:

  • Standard fee: €30
  • Health insurance contribution: €20
  • Co-payment for the patient: €10
  • Supplementary fee at 150% of €30: €45

You therefore pay €55 in total (€10 co-payment and €45 supplementary fee)

The time slots during which partially conventioned doctors may charge supplementary fees are listed on the NIHDI website (National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance, RIZIV/INAMI).

A non-conventioned doctor may always charge supplementary fees.

For example:

  • Standard fee: €30
  • Health insurance contribution: €20
  • Co-payment for the patient: €10
  • Supplementary fee at 150% of €30: €45

You therefore pay €55 in total (€10 co-payment and €45 supplementary fee)

Work accident

In case of an accident at work, please also bring the following information:

  • Name and address of your employer
  • Name and address of your employer's insurance company
  • Policy number
  • Date of the work accident

We will then send the invoice to your employer's insurance provider.

Costs not covered by work accident insurance can still be presented to your hospitalisation insurance.
