In the gastrointestinal and liver diseases department, we treat diseases of the stomach, intestine, liver, gallbladder and pancreas in adults. Children/young people up to 17 years old can be treated at the paediatrics department.

You always need a referral letter from a general practitioner or specialist.

Digestive oncology

Digestive oncology is concerned with the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal system. This includes oncological pathologies originating from the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, small or large intestine, or the rectum.

Hepatology

Hepatology is a unit within the department of gastroenterology and hepatology responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with liver, gallbladder and pancreatic diseases.

Supplement with probiotics can alleviate unexplained stomach complaints

Food supplements with beneficial bacteria or probiotics can reduce unexplained stomach complaints, presumably by improving the gut flora and by positively influencing the immune system, as shown for the first time by a trial led by UZ Leuven in 68 patients.

Inflammation of the duodenum seems to be cause of unexplained stomach problems

Leuven researchers have discovered that stomach problems are often linked to an inflamation of the first part of the small intestine. The degree of inflammation is considered to be a new biomarker that can help reach the right diagnosis. At the same time it is an important starting point for better treatments.

New diet app for irritable bowel syndrome more efficient than medication

Patients that go to their GP with symptoms of the irritable bowel syndrome can be helped more than adequately with special diet, as shown by an UZ Leuven trial. The results lead to a new recommendation for the follow-up of irritable bowel syndrome via GPs.
