The center for human genetics (CME) is 1 of 8 approved genetic centres in Belgium. The clinical team provides genetic services and organizes genetic consultations for this purpose. The laboratory offers genetic testing for rare congenital disorders and for acquired malignancies.

Scientific research

In the Department of Human Genetics at KU Leuven, we conduct cutting-edge scientific research and offer an up-to-date educational program in the field of human genetics and genomics. We apply genetic and genomic, molecular and bioinformatics technologies to improve our understanding of human disorders for the benefit of our patients and society at large. The Center for Human Genetics currently has 20 independent research groups. They also develop technologies to support clinical and basic genetic research at home and abroad.

Crack the DNA code

Today the Centre for human genetics (CME) of KU Leuven and UZ Leuven presented the educational game ‘Crack the DNA code’. The game is a playful introduction to DNA and genetics for children of the fifth and sixth grade which teaches them the basics of genetics in a very simple way.

New technique helps detect large-scale genetic variations in leukaemia

The Leuven centre for human genetics is one of the first genetic centres in the world that applies a new genetic test. The technique is called ‘optical genome mapping’ and can detect large genetic variations on chromosome level. Today, the test is already being used for diagnosing leukaemia.
