The PAZA recovery room

After your procedure, the team will take you to the recovery room. You will gradually wake up there and we will monitor you until you have recovered well and are stable.

Monitoring and IV drips

When you wake up, you will notice you are connected to various cables or devices. These measure your vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. You will also have one or more IV drips for pain relief and other medication.

Sometimes after the operation you may also have a urinary catheter or a drain. These will be removed later on your ward.

Comfort: pain or nausea

It is normal to still feel a lot after the operation. We will regularly ask how you feel and monitor pain or nausea closely. You will receive standard pain relief. If you are still in pain, we can provide additional pain relief.

Tell us immediately if you are in pain or feel nauseous, so we can help you straight away.

Noise and activity

The recovery room is a busy ward. You may sometimes hear beeps or alarms from monitors. This is normal and part of the monitoring.

Do you find the noise disturbing? Feel free to ask for earplugs or an eye mask.

Back to your ward

You will stay in the PAZA until your vital signs are good, you feel comfortable and you have recovered sufficiently from the anaesthetic. We will then take you back to your ward.

For parents and carers of children

As soon as the procedure is finished, one parent or carer may go back to the child. A staff member will come and collect you or show you the way to the recovery room.

To maintain a calm environment, only one adult carer per child is allowed in the recovery room. Brothers and sisters are not permitted.
