1000th patient with a smart insulin pump

A milestone in diabetes care: this week, the thousandth patient will receive a smart insulin pump at UZ Leuven. Of the 1,800 people being monitored for type 1 diabetes at UZ Leuven, more than half now use a smart pump.

A smart insulin pump combines a sensor with an insulin pump that is controlled by an algorithm. The sensor continuously measures blood sugar levels and sends this information to the pump, which automatically determines how much insulin to administer based on this data. The person also enters how many carbohydrates they will be eating and whether they have planned any physical activity.

The result? More stable glucose levels, fewer fluctuations and a noticeably better quality of life. ‘This technology represents a real step forward,’ says Prof. Dr. Pieter Gillard, endocrinologist at UZ Leuven. ‘The pump takes over a significant part of daily care. We see clearly better glucose levels and often more peace of mind and freedom in people living with type 1 diabetes.’

Education and follow-up

The success of the smart insulin pump is not based solely on technology, but also on the intensive support provided by the diabetes team. Diabetes educators and dieticians play a key role in this. They provide technical education on how to use the pump, replace infusion sets, set dosages and solve technical problems. In addition, they provide therapeutic support such as help with interpreting glucose values, adjusting insulin settings and coordinating nutrition and exercise.

We observe greater peace of mind and freedom among individuals who utilise the smart insulin pump.

In addition, they provide continuous follow-up, with a particular focus on comfort and adherence to treatment, supported by the possibilities offered by telemonitoring. ‘Cooperation between the patient, educator, dietitian and doctor is the key to success,’ says Rudi Caron, head nurse of the diabetes team at UZ Leuven. 'Together, we work towards better control, greater self-confidence and a higher quality of life.'

Pioneer in diabetes care

UZ Leuven is Belgium's largest centre for monitoring people living with type 1 diabetes who use this innovative technology. With more than 1,000 active users of smart insulin pumps, UZ Leuven confirms its role as a pioneer in Belgian diabetes care. The hospital combines high-tech innovation with human support, remaining a benchmark in Belgium for people living with type 1 diabetes.
