A milestone in diabetes care: this week, the thousandth patient will receive a smart insulin pump at UZ Leuven. Of the 1,800 people being monitored for type 1 diabetes at UZ Leuven, more than half now use a smart pump.

When something goes wrong in healthcare, it can have a major impact not only on patients and their loved ones, but also on healthcare providers themselves. For years, UZ Leuven has been supporting employees who struggle with feelings of guilt, fear, shame, or doubt about their own expertise after an incident. This approach is now being recognised internationally with a new quality label: UZ Leuven is the first hospital in the world to receive the European RESCUE accreditation.

An automated AI model can predict can predict the dose of immunosuppressive medication more accurately than doctors. This has been proven by a research team at UZ Leuven in a study conducted in clinical practice.

A Belgian research team has uncovered fundamental differences in the brain’s immune response between inherited and non-inherited forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), despite looking almost identical in the clinic. The findings, published today in Nature Neuroscience, could reshape how patients are stratified for trials and how future therapies are targeted.

The UZ Leuven mammography department has moved to a more spacious, completely renovated location on the Gasthuisberg campus. The surface area is twice as big, the equipment is even more modern and patients spend noticeably less time in the waiting area.

The Belgian proton therapy centre PARTICLE celebrates its fifth anniversary. To celebrate this, UZ Leuven is bringing together healthcare experts, policymakers and international specialists on Friday 27 June to look back on five years of pioneering work and to look ahead to the future of proton therapy in our country.

From Monday 2 June onwards, adult patients in UZ Leuven can designate a partner in care: a trusted person who actively supports them during their admission, including outside normal visiting hours. After a successful trial period, the project is now being rolled out throughout the entire hospital.

Recently, the lung transplant team successfully performed the 1,500th lung transplant at UZ Leuven. Today, the centre ranks among the top European centres and performs some two-thirds of all Belgian lung transplants every year and achieves excellent results.

The American magazine Newsweek and data platform Statista rranked the best hospitals in the world for the seventh year in a row: World's Best Hospitals 2025. In it, UZ Leuven is the first Belgian hospital at position 40, which is four places higher than in 2024 and no less than eight places higher than in 2023.

Volunteering has been part of healthcare at UZ Leuven for 50 years. What began as a small-scale initiative has now grown into a well-organised operation with 475 active volunteers.

More than half a million Belgians are affected by a rare disease, but the expertise is fragmented. For the first time, the Leuven Institute for Rare Diseases (Leuven.IRD) brings together research expertise in rare diseases at KU Leuven.

The Leuven Cancer Institute (LKI) has officially been recognized as a 'Comprehensive Cancer Centre' (CCC) by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). As only the second center in Belgium to receive this prestigious accreditation, the LKI has been acknowledged for its excellence in oncology care, groundbreaking research, and high-quality training.
