Transplants
In 2025, 388 organs were transplanted at UZ Leuven, or 31,2% of all transplanted organs in Belgium. This makes UZ Leuven the largest of the 8 transplant centres in Belgium.
Of the 115 kidney transplants, 23 were via living donation. A total of 152 lungs were transplanted during 76 double lung transplants. There were also 88 liver transplants, 27 heart transplants, 4 pancreas transplants and 2 intestinal transplants.
In most recipients, 1 organ was transplanted. In 14 patients, a combined transplant of 2 organs was performed and 2 patients received a transplant of 3 organs each. With 16 combined organ transplants in 2025, UZ Leuven performed 50% of all combined transplants in Belgium.

Oncology - Leuven Cancer Institute (LCI)
As in previous years, these oncology figures 2025 are based on the number of patients with oncological problems (both diagnosed and suspected). In principle, UZ Leuven uses figures determined according to OECI definitions, taking into account only patients with a confirmed diagnosis. Due to a delay in the registration of hospital data, these figures are not available in time and we therefore provide here the figures according to the same method as previous years.
Medical-technical interventions and examinations
1,158 clinical studies
In clinical trials - scientific research on humans - researchers and patients work together to find better diagnostic tools, new insights and innovative treatments.
In 2025, 1,158 new studies were notified to the clinical trial centre (CTC) at UZ Leuven, including 427 commercial studies, 731 academic studies and 119 studies involving human body material.
In total, more than 1 million patients are participating in a clinical trial. 394.312 of them started in 2025.

Sustainability
For more than 20 years, UZ Leuven has been working to promote sustainable healthcare. Our activities focus on the areas where we can have the greatest impact: energy and climate; waste, materials, circularity, and food; mobility; procurement; nature and biodiversity; water; and infrastructure.
Our ambition is to continue investing explicitly in sustainable healthcare, making sustainability a natural part of our daily operations.
Are you curious about UZ Leuven's sustainability policy and more details about our actions and evolutions? Be sure to take a look at UZ Leuven's sustainability report, which will be published on our website in June.
Mobility
UZ Leuven promotes sustainable means of transportation, by offering its employees a bicycle allowance and free public transportation.
In addition, in 2025 we launched a bicycle lease project that gives our CAO-employees the option to use (part of) their end-of-year bonus to lease an (electric) bicycle for commuting.
The percentage of employees who cycle to work has almost doubled in the last 10 years. This means that in 2025, we cycled a total of 5,870,939 kilometers!
Energy and climate
Waste, materials, circularity, and food
Over the past year, the amount of hazardous medical waste (HMW) has fallen by more than 10%. This is good news, given that HMW is the hospital's most polluting waste stream.
We were able to achieve this great result by clarifying the sorting rules for (hazardous medical) waste and launching various projects to reduce the amount of RMA produced.
