Registration of death

Death needs to be registered with the city of Leuven. The city will prepare a death certificate. Registration is usually done by the funeral director, but in principle anyone of legal age can do it.

Any adult can register a death. If you are working with a funeral director, they will usually take care of registering the death for you.

Registration of a person's death is done at the civil registry department of the city of Leuven. Make an appointment via the city of Leuven website.

Saying goodbye to a deceased person

You can visit the mortuary to say goodbye to the deceased from Monday to Friday between 14 and 17 hrs. During the weekend and on public holidays this is possible in the morning and by appointment only.

Funeral or cremation?

Transfer of the deceased

The deceased can be collected from the mortuary for transfer to a private funeral home every day between 9 and 12:30 hours and between 13:30 and 17 hrs.
