Intensive Care Units

Intensieve zorg 5

This unit within the intensive medicine department mainly accommodates patients after cardiac surgery or heart and/or lung transplantation.

Intensieve zorg 6

This unit within the intensive medicine department mainly accommodates patients after abdominal surgery, after liver transplantation, after neurological surgery or with neurological disorders.

Intensieve zorg 7

This ICU mainly accommodates seriously ill children aged 0 to 16 years, after complex surgery or for major treatment.

Intensieve zorg 8

This ICU within the intensive care department is one of six official burn centres in Belgium. It mainly accommodates patients in need of complex wound care (such as burns), after severe trauma or reconstructive surgery. Both adults and children can be admitted here.

Intensieve zorg 9

This unit within the intensive care department mainly accommodates patients after neurosurgical surgery or with neurological disorders (e.g. epilepsy or brain disease).

Mechanism behind deadly fungal infection on top of influenza or Covid-19 deciphered

Over 15 per cent of all critically ill patients who end up in intensive care with severe influenza or Covid-19 additionally develop aspergillosis, a pulmonary fungal infection. This doubles their mortality rate. A UZ Leuven and KU Leuven trial with international partners has revealed the underlying mechanism.

Leuven study shows immune reaction in the lungs of seriously ill COVID-19 patients

UZ Leuven, KU Leuven researchers and the VIB have examined the immune reaction in COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Analyses of the lung fluid showed new factors that play a role in the excessive immune reactions against the virus, which are crucial for the development of treatments.

Research

The Intensive Medicine research group is part of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, which is located on the Gasthuisberg campus, and is affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven.
