UZ Leuven, a mother and baby-friendly hospital

By complying to the conditions and meeting the objectives set by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the care of mothers and babies, we have earned international recognition since 2008: the BFHI (Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative) certificate. These conditions help give every baby, from birth, the best chance of optimal health. We follow the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding drafted by the WHO and UNICEF to give every baby the best possible start. Our hospital also has mother-friendly initiatives, and we observe the international code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

Baby-friendly hospital

UZ Leuven has been internationally certified as a Baby-friendly Hospital since 2008. This means that we meet the criteria to give every baby, from birth, the best possible chances for optimal health.

Mother-friendly initiatives

We want the best care for mothers and mothers-to-be, which is why we have developed several mother-friendly initiatives.

Ten steps to successful breastfeeding

We follow the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding developed by the WHO and UNICEF to give every baby the best possible start.

The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes

We observe the international code of marketing of breastmilk substitutes. Among other things, we do not promote infant formula or provide free samples of it.
