Immunotherapy increases survival rates in kidney cancer, but does not work for everyone. A Leuven research team developed a new method to predict which patients will benefit from it. Their study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, also opens new avenues to even more effective treatments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can help ophthalmologists recognise glaucoma, the main cause of blindness. Belgian researchers have developed a new AI model and trained it with eye images of patients at UZ Leuven. The algorithm was able to detect glaucoma in 13 external datasets.

An international research project led by UZ Leuven and the KU Leuven is one of the four shortlisted projects competing for a 35 million euro award of the British Heart Foundation. The objective of the project is to develop smart wearable sensors and other technology for heart diseases.

ArtiQ, a KU Leuven spin-off company which helps doctors diagnose, treat and monitor respiratory disorders, has concluded its seed financing round with € 1 million. The money will be used to develop a software platform that will be able to quickly and reliably evaluate patients' lung capacity.

A team of scientists at VIB and KU Leuven developed a machine learning algorithm that can diagnose arthritis in children with almost 90% accuracy, purely on the basis of a blood test. The new findings open the door to the use of machine learning for faster diagnosis and personalised treatment.
