Possible problems or complaints during your CPAP therapy

A CPAP treatment has no side effects. However, problems or discomfort may occur, such as a blocked or runny nose, issues with your mask or claustrophobia.

Contact

  • For urgent problems or serious complaints related to your CPAP therapy, you can always contact the sleep centre at 016 34 25 20.

Blocked or runny nose

This is one of the most common complaints, as our nasal mucosa are not used to the slightly increased pressure and the cold/dry airflow. These complaints often disappear on their own during the first weeks.

Make sure the room temperature is at least 18 °C throughout the night. The main cause of nasal complaints is a room that is too cold.

If you already have nasal problems when starting the treatment, the sleep centre may provide you with a humidifier to take home. Patients without a humidifier can have one installed later at the sleep centre if the complaints persist for a few weeks.

A runny or blocked nose due to a cold is temporarily treated with a nasal spray. Please consult your GP for this.

If the complaints are caused by abnormalities in the nose (e.g. a deviated nasal septum), we will refer you to our ear, nose and throat department.

Problems with the mask

A poorly fitting mask or incorrect use are the main causes of problems.

Our masks are completely latex-free, so allergic reactions to the materials used are very rare.

  • A poorly sealed mask may leak, causing the pressure to drop and the pump to work harder. This may cause noise disturbance.
  • A leak towards the eyes may cause conjunctivitis.
  • A mask that is too tight can cause prolonged redness and pressure sores.
  • Using ointments, creams or cosmetics under the mask can cause irritation and rash.

Claustrophobia

Some people experience a claustrophobic feeling at the start of treatment. This can further disturb breathing.

In our sleep centre, we have several very small masks. Together with you, we will look for the most comfortable alternative.

We give you time to gradually get used to the device.

If the complaints persist, we can refer you to one of our psychologists.

Other complaints

Other complaints are very rare. These may include a sensation of too little or too much pressure, nosebleeds, pressure in the inner ear, bloating in the stomach, etc.

Do you have one of these complaints? Then it is best to make an appointment at the sleep centre.
