Leuven university fertility centre ranks among the top 3 in Belgium

Based on national reporting of medically assisted reproduction treatments, the Leuven University Fertility Centre (LUFC) ranks among the top three Belgian fertility centres in terms of pregnancy rates after IVF and ICSI. These results cover the period from 2020 to 2023, as recorded in BELRAP (Belgian Register for Assisted Procreation).

Strong results in young women

In IVF (in vitro fertilisation), the eggs are fertilised outside the body in the laboratory and, after a few days, an embryo is transferred back into the uterus. In ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), we inject a single sperm cell directly into an egg, especially in cases of male fertility problems.

Well over 70% of our patients under the age of 36 have a child after completing their IVF treatment. This takes into account the entire treatment process, including both fresh embryo transfers and transfers with frozen embryos. These results place the Leuven University Fertility Centre among the leading Belgian centres.

Prof. dr. Sharon Lie Fong, gynaecologist and head of department of the fertility centre at UZ Leuven: 'This is a nice recognition of the dedication of our entire team over the past few years, and an inspiration to continue striving for better, individualised care.'

Results require nuance

Results of fertility treatments depend on many factors, such as age, medical history and type of treatment. The national registration collects these results over several years and from large groups of patients in order to effectively monitor the quality of care. The figures are therefore not a prediction for an individual patient's course of treatment.

Focus on quality and expertise

The results reflect the many years of expertise of the multidisciplinary team of the Leuven fertility centre. Doctors, nurses, embryologists and other healthcare professionals work closely together and continuously assess their results,  focusing on safety and high-quality care tailored to each patient.
