Paediatrician

Sometimes a paediatrician attends the delivery. This could be for cases of assisted delivery, prematurity or if the baby has passed stool into the amniotic fluid. If possible, the paediatrician will examine your baby in your delivery room so that you are not separated. Admission to the neonatology unit may be necessary. In that event, you may visit your baby as soon as you have been admitted to the maternity ward, usually around two hours after the delivery.

Skin contact with your baby

If all is well with you and your baby, the midwife will place your baby on your stomach immediately after the delivery. This skin-to-skin contact with your baby helps the child adjust and offers numerous benefits.

Umbilical cord blood?

Stem cells in umbilical cord blood can save lives. For patients with leukaemia (or another blood disease) a stem cell transplant is often the last chance of survival if none of the other classic treatments are unsuccessful.
