Restless legs syndrome

Nocturnal periodic leg movement syndrome
Uncontrollable urge to move your legs due to an unpleasant tingling sensation while sitting or lying down.

Symptoms and characteristics

  • Mainly occurs in the evening.
  • Also occurs during sleep, often several times per minute. This disrupts normal sleep and may cause insomnia and/or daytime fatigue.
  • Typically, during sleep, you make a slight bending motion of the foot and knee every 20 to 30 seconds.

Possible causes

  • Iron deficiency
  • Kidney function impairment, including side effects of medication (especially antidepressants)

Often, no clear cause is found. 

Treatment

This condition can be treated with medication.

Examinations and diagnosis

In case of (suspicion of) this condition, one or more tests will be carried out.
