Symptoms
- You fall asleep suddenly. You then usually sleep for a few minutes up to fifteen minutes.
- You can fall asleep anywhere.
- Muscle weakness may occur for a few seconds or minutes, especially after intense emotion such as laughter or anger.
- Most commonly in the head and neck, but sometimes also in the legs. You may feel it is hard to keep your head upright or feel your knees buckling slightly.
- You may collapse to the ground (cataplexy).
- Sleep paralysis, especially when falling asleep or waking up.
- This can be very frightening, especially if you feel unable to breathe or if it is accompanied by hallucinations.
Is narcolepsy common?
This sleep disorder is quite rare, but very serious. Attacks can happen anywhere and at any time, which can result in life-threatening situations.
