Research into bacteriophage therapy

Despite the recent and promising clinical trials, quality data on phage therapy remains scarce. It is therefore still too early to give phage therapy a permanent place in standard clinical practice.

This is why the Coordination group for Bacteriophage therapy Leuven (CBL) was recently given financial support (Interdisciplinary Networks (IDN), KU Leuven: project PHAGEFORCE) for executing scientific research into phage therapy. The group assesses the safety and efficacy of phage therapy and is working on optimising bacteriophage cocktails based on machine learning. The objective is to implement bacteriophage therapy in well-defined patient populations, and make sure that quality of care is maintained and ultimately improved.
