Collection systems for your colostomy

Two types of collection system are used, regardless of the brand of equipment you use: a one-piece or a two-piece system.

The collection system always consists of

A collection pouch: a colostomy pouch is a sealed bag with a carbon filter that neutralises intestinal gases and odours. The pouch has to be replaced once it is half full. You can choose between a transparent pouch or one made from a discreet, non-transparent grey or skin-coloured material.
A protective flange which is applied to the skin around the stoma.

One-piece system

In a one-piece collection system, the collection pouch is attached to the flange.

When due for replacement the entire system needs to be replaced. It is advisable to replace the complete system twice a day.

Two-piece system

In a two-piece system, the flange and collection pouch are two separate components. The pouch can be clicked or stuck onto the flange.

The pouch must be replaced twice a day. The protective flange can be left in place for several days, but it is advisable to replace it every three days.

Immediately after the operation a two-piece system will be used with a transparent pouch, which can be emptied, to facilitate the care process. The use of a drainable pouch is recommended because stools are usually very loose following the operation.
