2022 key figures

The 2022 key figures are once again impressive: our 9,963 employees ensured the smooth running of over 759,000 consultations, approximately 177,000 (day) admissions and nearly 56,000 surgical procedures.

In 2022, UZ Leuven performed 55,991 surgical procedures. That is 110 more than in 2021. Per operational working day in 2022 there were on average 224 procedures, 143 of which in the surgical outpatient clinic.

335 transplantations

In 2022 UZ Leuven performed 335 organ transplantations or 32.1% of all organ transplantations in Belgium, making UZ Leuven the largest of the 8 transplant centres in Belgium.

Out of 122 kidney transplants, 14 were with living donation. A total of 119 lungs were transplanted over 55 double lung transplants and 2 single lung transplants. There were also 69 liver transplants, 19 heart transplants, 11 pancreas transplants and 2 small intestine transplants.

Most transplants were 1 organ transplants. For 20 patients it was a combined transplant of 2 organs and for one patient even 3 organs. As a result UZ Leuven performed 50% of the 42 combined transplants in Belgium.

There were 759,073 consultations in 2022, approximately the same as in 2021. Every operational weekday, there were on average 3,036 consultations, spread over the various UZ Leuven campuses.

In 2022, there was a total number of 72,097 entries to the emergency room, an increase of 14.7% in comparison to 2021. 37% of all hospital admissions come in through the emergency room.

In 2022 there were 263,157 internal patient transfers, e.g. transporting admitted patients to and from their function tests. 96.3% of the patients were collected within 10 minutes.

In 2022, 2,819 patients were treated with one or other form of radiotherapy, most of them with external radiotherapy. In total there were 36,336 treatment sessions.

The total number of nuclear tests (excluding tracers and therapies) amounted to 17,604. In 46% of the cases it involved a PET scan.

The number of kidney dialyses increased from 33,090 in 2021 to 34,096 in 2022.

The total number of radiology examinations in 2022 was 401,757. On average, UZ Leuven performed 1,101 radiology examinations a day.

In 2022, there were 126,295 visits to function tests for cardiology, respiratory diseases, endoscopy and neurophysiology.

In 2022, UZ Leuven performed 16,645,566 lab tests. This means on average 1,900 tests an hour and 45,604 tests a day.

1,167 clinical trials

In clinical trials – scientific research in humans – both researchers and patients look for improved diagnostic aids, new insights and innovative treatments.

In 2022, 1,167 new trials were registered at the UZ Leuven clinical trial centre (CTC), 291 of which were commercial trials and 876 academic.

    • In 2022, 62.46% of the UZ Leuven employees came to work by car. The percentage of employees that come to work on their bike increased from 22.7% in 2021 to 25.8% in 2022.

    In 2022, 9% of the employees came to work by public transport, compared to 8.8% in 2021. In total 37.6% of our employees regularly used either the bike or public transport.

    UZ Leuven promotes sustainable transport by offering its employees a bicycle allowance and free public transport.
