Surgical procedures
In 2020, UZ Leuven performed 48,193 surgical procedures. That is 9,153 less than in 2019, a decrease of almost 16%. Per operational working day in 2020, there were on average 191 surgical procedures, 116 of which in the surgical outpatient clinic.

256 transplantations

In 2020 UZ Leuven performed in total 258 trans­­plantations.

Out of 111 kidney transplants, 14 were living donor transplants. Out of the 65 lung transplants, 64 were double lung transplants and 1 single lung transplant.

In 2020 there were also 61 liver transplants, 14 heart transplants, 5 pancreas transplants and 2 small intestine transplants. 1 organ transplants were the most common. 10 patients underwent a combined transplant of 2 organs and for 3 patients it was even a combined transplant of 3 organs.

Medical-technical interventions and examinations

1,157 clinical trials

In clinical trials – scientific research in humans – both researchers and patients look for improved diagnostic aids, new insights and innovative treatments.

In 2020 UZ Leuven/KU Leuven initiated 1,157 clinical trials, 122 of which in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. 470 trials are UZ Leuven only trials, while 561 trials also involve other participating centres. 

The majority (65%) are trials initiated and supervised by UZ Leuven-/KU Leuven researchers. 25% was headed by a commercial firm. 

In 809 trials research focussed on medical data or human material (blood, tissue). 287 trials dealt with medication, 60 with a medical aid and one trial studied the combination of medication and a medical aid.

In 2020, 66.4% of the UZ Leuven employees came to work by car. The percentage of employees that come to work on their bike increased from 19% in 2019 to 21.5% in 2020.

In 2020, 9.4% of the employees came to work by public transport, compared to 11% in 2019. In total 33.6% of our employees regularly used either the bike or public transport.

UZ Leuven promotes sustainable means of transport by offering its employees a bicycle allowance and free public transport.
