Visiting hours

  • Both parents are welcome throughout the day. One single parent may also stay overnight (rooming-in).

  • Visits are possible every day from 14:00 to 20:00. Please request a visitor code from the parents in advance.

  • Come with a maximum of 2 visitors at the same time.

  • Limit your visit to 2 hours.

  • Children who come along on a visit must remain in the room. In an isolation room, children under 12 years old may not visit.

  • Please leave the room during the patient’s care or the doctor’s visit.

  • Do not visit if you are ill yourself. Children in particular are better off staying at home if there is a risk of infection.

  • Thank you for helping to maintain peace and quiet on the ward at all times.

Access with QR code

Visitors can only access the ward using a QR code.

  • Coordinate with the parents for when you will visit.

Preparing for your stay

Always bring a valid ID for yourself and your child. Read what else you need to bring for a smooth admission.
Remember to inform your health insurance provider, hospitalisation insurance provider and your GP as soon as your admission is planned and arranged.
On this ward, you can request a single room. The admissions department will take this into account according to availability. Single rooms are used at most for patients requiring isolation and critically ill patients. Please check in advance with your insurer whether the extra cost of a single room is included in your insurance policy.

During your stay

One parent can stay overnight in the child’s room on a sofa bed or a chair bed. For this accommodation and any meals, an additional charge applies. Parents are involved in the care as much as possible.
Relatives of hospitalised patients can stay in one of the rooms at the hospital's family residence.
We do everything we can to prevent pain in our patients. For children, we make an extra effort to avoid them developing trauma or becoming chronic pain patients later in life.
Most patients on this ward have impaired immunity. Therefore, a few specific measures are needed. Simple precautions help stop the spread of bacteria and thus prevent hospital infections.

Isolation measures

  • When a child is cared for in isolation, the nurse will explain which precautions parents and visitors must take when entering and leaving the room. In most cases this means thoroughly disinfecting or washing hands; sometimes a face mask must also be worn. These instructions are also posted on the room door. This is important to prevent other patients from becoming infected.

Prevent your child from falling — practical tips

As a parent, help keep your child safe with these fall-prevention tips.

Inform the nursing and medical team:

  • if your child has an increased risk of falling (e.g. due to age, epilepsy, poor eyesight, temperament),
  • or if your child needs assistive devices or is taking medication that affects balance or alertness.

Help ensure a safe environment

  • Do not leave toys or other items lying around in the room.
  • Put sturdy shoes or slippers on your child.
  • Pay extra attention to the IV line (and any pump), the monitor and the probes.

Keep an eye on your child

  • Help and support your child if they want to move around the room or go to the toilet.
  • Never leave a young child alone on a changing mat or in the bath.
  • Try to be with your child when they awaken after an examination or procedure under anaesthesia (general anaesthesia or sedation).

Give your feedback for even better care

  • Every parent of a child admitted to UZ Leuven can complete the Vlaamse Patiëntenpeiling. This can be done via the Octopuz screen at the bed (button ‘Enquêtes’) or via mynexuzhealth (after your stay, you’ll receive an invitation by e-mail and/or in the app). By sharing your experiences in the hospital through this questionnaire, you help improve care and services for all patients in the children’s hospital.
