Stem cell collection

The harvesting and collection of stem cells circulating in the blood. This is done both in patients (autologous donors) and in related or unrelated donors (allogeneic donors).

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the mother cells from which all the different blood cells arise: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Under normal conditions, stem cells are found almost exclusively in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is thus responsible for producing countless blood cells every day.

What is a stem cell collection?

A stem cell collection involves taking stem cells that circulate in the blood.

The goal of a stem cell collection is a stem cell transplant, in which the patient receives stem cells to replace bone marrow. These may be the patient’s own stem cells after chemotherapy (autologous transplant), or stem cells from a healthy donor (allogeneic transplant).

How does a stem cell collection proceed?

What is the purpose of a stem cell collection? How does the procedure work, and what can you expect? What does the process look like if you donate stem cells for someone else (allogeneic donor)?
