The figures for 2023 are once again quite impressive: together, our 9,981 employees ensured the smooth running of over 776,000 consultations, about 185,000 (day)admissions and almost 58,000 surgical procedures.

surgical procedures
In 2023, 57,920 surgical procedures were performed. This is over 1,900 more than in 2022. Per operational working day in 2023, there were on average 232 surgical procedures, 143 of which were performed in the surgical day hospital.

385 transplants

In 2023, UZ Leuven performed 385 organ transplants or 33.1% of all organ transplants in Belgium. This makes UZ Leuven the largest of the 8 transplant centres in Belgium.

Of the 129 kidney transplants, 14 were via living donation. A total of 142 lungs were transplanted during 70 double and 2 single lung transplants. 93 liver transplants, 14 heart transplants, 5 pancreas transplants and 2 small intestine transplants also took place.

In most recipients, 1 organ was transplanted. In 12 patients, a combined transplant of 2 organs was performed and in 2 patients even 3 organs were involved. With 14 combined organ transplants in 2023, UZ Leuven performed 41.2% of the 34 combined transplants in Belgium.

810 clinical studies

In clinical trials - scientific research on humans - researchers and patients work together to find better diagnostic tools, new insights and innovative treatments.

In 2023, 810 new studies were registered at the clinical trial centre (CTC) of UZ Leuven, 234 of which were commercial studies and 576 academic.

  • In 2023, 61.7% of UZ Leuven employees came to work by car. The percentage of employees that come to work on their bike bike increased from 25.8% in 2022 to 26.4% in 2023.

    In 2023, 9.3% of employees came to work by public transport, up from 9% in 2022. Overall, 38.3% of our employees regularly came by bike and/or public transport.

    UZ Leuven promotes sustainable means of transport by offering its employees a bicycle allowance and free public transport.
