Research

Foto van onderzoek aan microscoopResearch at the Leuven University Fertility Center is focused on assisted reproduction and endometriosis, in collaboration with leading European institutions including Cambridge Oxford and Karolinska, and in collaboration with the Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi, Kenya.

Research in endometriosis focuses on

  • the effects of surgery on fertility, pain and quality of life
  • the effects of assisted reproduction on fertility outcome
  • on preclinical development of new endometriosis drugs (using the baboon model for endometriosis)
  • the pathogenesis of endometriosis using in vitro adhesion assays, proteomics, microarray and other molecular techniques.

In the area of assisted reproduction, research focuses on

  • the development of optimal hormonal stimulation protocols
  • continous quality improvement in all  relevant laboratory and clinical aspects
  • evidence-based reproductive medicine
  • the relation between fertility, genetics and the environment.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and screening and embryo cryopreservation are special areas of interest and research.

Furthermore, the LUFC is developing a system of Assisted Reproduction in the baboon, as a preclinical model for research in embryonic stem cells and in embryo implantation. An important research program is also devoted to evaluate the relationship between stress and infertility and how fertility counseling and stress management may improve quality of life and success of infertility treatment.
