Your treatment will depend on the cause. For Alzheimer's disease there is currently medication that has a proven effect. Depending on the stage of the disease, this may be a cholinesterase inhibitor, possibly also combined with Memantine.

If your problems with memory or concentration are due to a brain injury (a stroke, accident or surgery), then a programme of cognitive rehabilitation will be arranged. Even in early dementia this programme can still be started.

If you have depression or any other behavioural or emotional problem, you will be treated by the psychiatrist in the memory clinic.

Depression may be both a cause and a consequence of memory problems, or it may be caused by the underlying disease (such as Alzheimer's disease).
