History: from basic pharmacology to clinical pharmacology

Past

About 35 years ago professor emeritus P. De Schepper started to conduct clinical trials as part of his research activities within the Department of Pharmacology (Faculty of Medicine, K.U.Leuven, Belgium). Because of expanding clinical research activities and in order to comply with increasingly stringent international guidelines, the Center for Clinical Pharmacology became a separate, self-supporting unit within the University Hospital Gasthuisberg in 1995.

Present

The activities of the Center for Clinical Pharmacology are clustered in three divisions:

  • the Clinical Research Unit which provides a professional environment for conducting trials in the exploratory phase of clinical drug development.
  • the Bio-Analytical Laboratory which is mainly devoted to the development and validation of drug assessments in biological fluids.
  • the Cardiovascular Research Unit which focuses on in vivo cardiovascular pharmacology by applying both invasive and non-invasive techniques to healthy volunteers and selected groups of patients.

By expanding the Center to about 1000 m2, new and fully equiped modern research facilities are available since spring 2002. Maintaining superior quality output by full implementation of Standard Operating Procedures and delivering results in due time are top priorities.
